Fairies: Real or Imaginary?

Fairies, real or imaginary, with all the reported sightings throughout the centuries you would think we would know the truth.

The Cottingley Fairies, the most infamous fairy sighting, was perpetrated by two young girls. In the 1920’s two cousins, who loved fairies, took a series of pictures with fairies in them! These pictures were evidence enough that fairies and other mythical beings were real. For fifty years, the cousins kept the truth behind their amazing photos a secret.  But in the 1970’s these two girls, who were now old women, were interviewed on the subject. The truth was one of the girls was a talented artist who drew the fairies on paper cutouts, and secured them in place with hatpins in the pictures.  When people found out the truth about the Cottingley Fairies, many were heartbroken that the fairies in the pictures weren’t real and that they had been mislead for so many years.

The Cottingley Fairies was just one of the famous fairy sightings, there were many others dating as far back as the 1700’s. But fairy sightings were not always fun and exciting; many people were killed because they were thought to be evil fairies. There were sightings of fairies abducting children, fairies killing people, and thousands of fairy sightings in gardens and forests. As with many mythical creatures in the earlier centuries, they were feared.

I guess it’s a good thing we no longer believe fairies are evil.  I’m sure Tinkerbell would agree!  I’ve never seen a real fairy, but I am always on the lookout.  I would love to hear your fairy stories so drop us a comment below.
